Region Västerbotten – Laboratory Medicine
Region Västerbotten is driven by the goal of creating a safe and strong region that people want to live in, move to, work in, visit, and collaborate with. We demonstrate how good health and sustainable development are interconnected and work to ensure they strengthen each other. Our mission is to offer and develop health care and regional development together with individuals, businesses, and societal actors. We also provide university hospital care for northern Sweden, featuring national and international top research, as well as education for all professions within health and social care.
Laboratory Medicine Västerbotten has approximately 520 employees within the laboratory specialties of clinical pathology, clinical immunology and transfusion medicine, clinical chemistry, clinical microbiology, and clinical genetics. The operations also include a biobank, infection prevention and control, and a tissue bank. We are a county organization with operations in Lycksele, Skellefteå, and Umeå. The operations have been accredited according to ISO 15189 since 1998.
Clinical Chemistry
Clinical Chemistry is located at Norrlands University Hospital in Umeå and at the district hospitals in Lycksele and Skellefteå. Clinical Chemistry has approximately 140 employees, of whom about 100 are based in Umeå. Parts of the operations are open around the clock, and Clinical Chemistry in the county issues approximately 7 million analysis results per year. At the chromatography laboratory, more than 40,000 samples are analyzed annually, primarily for the diagnosis of substance abuse and various disease conditions. Analysis is performed using chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods. Samples come mainly from hospitals and other healthcare facilities in the northern region.
As a hospital chemist, you will be part of a work group with colleagues from various professional categories who value collaboration and support each other. On the chromatography section, there are two chemists and five biomedical laboratory scientists; the operations are scheduled during daytime hours.
1 position(s).
Responsibilities
As a hospital chemist with us, you contribute knowledge and engagement that makes people feel safe in healthcare.
- You participate in the development of new methods and are also responsible for ensuring that methods in operation function correctly and meet decided quality goals. Problem-solving is part of the daily routine. The role includes responsibility for maintenance and service outside of service contracts.
- You actively participate in ensuring that technical procedures are in place and up to date, and that documentation follows the quality management system and accreditation requirements. Procurement with requirement specifications and commissioning of new methods and instruments are part of the work.
- You will, as needed, analyze samples from clinical routine operations as well as from research projects. Research samples often come from biobanked samples, and the development of methods requiring low sample volume is essential. Analysis is performed using gas chromatography (GC) or liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).
- The work is carried out in consultation with responsible physicians, other hospital chemists, engineers, and the medical manager/department head. The daily work is highly varied, ranging from practical tasks to secure daily operations and quality documentation to participating in and/or leading development projects.
You are stationed in Umeå but have a county-wide assignment.

You have very good skills in Swedish, both spoken and written, and can communicate easily with different professional groups. You have good skills in English, spoken and written.
